Use these tips to create a homework space that will help your child stay organized and focused.
Homework time can be a struggle for many students. Often the struggle stems from disorganization and not having the needed supplies on hand. A special homework space will keep all the supplies in one location and ease the transition into homework time. A Space of Their OwnYoung students need to have a comfortable writing surface, such as a desk, and a comfortable chair for homework time. The surface of the desk should be kept clear of everything but needed homework supplies. Ideally, the desk would be located in a room without access to a television or other distractions. Be sure the size of the desk is appropriate for the student. Keep Supplies at HandStock the homework area with accessible, practical supplies. Pencils, pens, erasers, rulers, paper and anything else your student needs often should be kept in the desk. Depending on the student’s age, art supplies, such as crayons, glue, and scissors, may also have to be stocked. Age appropriate reference materials are useful. For elementary aged children, a child’s dictionary is helpful. Older students can benefit from a current dictionary and a thesaurus. Extra TouchesA chalkboard is helpful for young students practicing spelling words or math problems. It also helps save paper by being a convenient place to scribble notes and figures that will not have to be turned into the teacher. A globe or a map of the world is a handy reference tool for all ages. ComputersKeep the computer separate from the actual homework area. Students who need to use the computer can transition during homework time. Not all homework needs to be done on a computer and it can serve as a distraction. Portable Homework SpaceNot every home has space for a separate homework desk and not all students like to work at a desk. Some prefer the kitchen table or the living room floor. If this is the case, create a portable homework container that can be used anywhere. A plastic container filled with all the necessary supplies, reference materials, and a small lap desk will be handy. Change the SceneryConsider taking a portable homework container outdoors on nice days. The fresh air could be the extra boost a reluctant student needs to focus. A picnic table or the lawn makes a great homework surface. Alternatively, when a large project needs completing or a major test requires serious studying, spending time at the library may increase homework efficiency.
